NEW INITIATIVETO ENHANCE ENVIRONMENTALl AND SOCIAL SAFEGUARDS IN FCTUBEB SCHOOLS KICKS OFF.
The FCT-Universal Basic Education Board and Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC join collaborative effort aimed at improving environmental and social safeguards in schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It was officially presented at the FCT UBEB Board room today, with key stakeholders gathered to discuss the importance of creating a safe and inclusive educational environment.
During the event, Director of Planning Research & Statistics of the Board,Malam Cimbo Leda who represented the Acting Executive Chairman of the Board, Dr. Alhassan Sule commended the Environmental and Social Safeguard (E&SS) team for their dedication and commitment to advancing this important project. He expressed gratitude for their efforts in bringing the initiative to FCT schools.
Stella Blaize, the National Coordinator of E&SS, presented an overview of the project, emphasizing its objectives to enhance understanding of environmental and social safeguarding in educational institutions. She highlighted several key areas of focus, including:
Child Protection & Anti-Bullying: Promoting a safe learning environment free from harassment and abuse.
Gender Equality & Inclusivity: Ensuring equal opportunities and representation for all genders in schools.
Community Engagement & Participation: Encouraging local communities to actively participate in safeguarding initiatives.
Health, Safety & Well-Being: Prioritizing the overall health and well-being of students.
The presentation also introduced the roles of key personnel in the initiative. An Environmental Safeguard Officer will ensure compliance with environmental laws and promote sustainable practices, while a Social Safeguard Officer will focus on equity and the protection of vulnerable groups. The concept of a "Safe School" was reinforced, stressing the importance of creating a secure environment for both learners and staff.
Mr. Akila Dambara, UBEC Team Lead for E&SS, highlighted the progress made in other states regarding safeguarding measures and urged the Board to maximize their support for this initiative in the FCT. He emphasized the critical role of stakeholder collaboration in fostering a safe and sustainable school community.
In his closing remarks, Ochigbo Mathias, GRM officer ,FCT UBEB Safeguard, applauded the consultants from E&SS and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) team present at the meeting. He underscored the urgent need for everyone to speak out against child abuse and advocate for the safeguarding of all children to ensure they can learn in a safe environment.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the educational landscape in the FCT, promoting a culture of safety, equity, and sustainability for all students. Stakeholders were encouraged to actively engage and support the implementation of environmental and social safeguards in schools to create a better future for the next generation.
