FCTUBEB/UBEC STAGE FIRST AGRICULTURAL EXHIBITION by: OSSAI PATIENCE.

 

The FCT Universal Basic Education Board in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC conducted the 2019 First Annual Agricultural Exhibition for 41 selected Public Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in the territory.

 

In his speech, the Mandate Secretary,Federal Capital Territory Administration, Dr. Danlami Hayyo ably represented by the Director, Administration and Finance, Mr. Laremoh Abdulrazaq expressed his delight over the Agricultural show.He called to remembrance that before crude oil , Nigeria was a wealthy nation. The richness he stated is attributory to the natural endowments and vast fertile land for cultivation. He also said that feeding is a basic need of man and we are experiencing food shortages because of abandonment of Agriculture. He therefore maintained that we must go back to Agriculture in order to secure our food.

 

Speaking further, he affirmed that Agriculture is not only for subsistence farming but also a lucrative business and added that one can be a farmer and be rich. Mr. Abdulrazaq reiterated that the programme was to redirect our children to the rich heritage that God has given us.

 

He expressed profound appreciation to FCT UBEB and UBEC for reviving school farms and for recognizing the important position of Agriculture in the affairs of man. He enjoined that the tradition of school farms should be kept alive.

 

Earlier in his address of welcome,the Acting Executive Chairman of the Board, Dr. Alhassan Sule stated that he was highly pleased to witness the first Annual Agricultural Exhibition in the Public Schools. The Acting Chairman maintained that Agriculture is as old as mankind and the first occupation known by man. He therefore affirmed that by holding the exhibition, the Board is towing towards the path of Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda where Agriculture featured as a component. The Chairman underscored the benefits of Agriculture as a means of food security and employment. He maintained that many countries , the world over depend largely on it and that Agriculture is essential for any meaningful development. The Chairman disclosed that Agriculture as a subject was included in the curriculum because it will improve a lot in the economy declaring that it is through the subject we can have food sufficiency and security. Hence , introducing Agric in our basic schools is a right decision in the right direction, the Chairman explicated.

 

In his goodwill message, Mr. Yasir Muhammed Sani, Senior Education Officer, Academic Services, UBEC on behalf of his Department extended the heartfelt congratulations and unflagging support to the Nigeria child in Basic Education. He averred that the programme presented a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating and enriching world of Agriculture. He assured the Board that Academic services is firmly behind them in the programme and is ever ready to provide the resources and guidance needed for the children to excel in their school farms.
