FCT UBEB, UBEC Launch Ambitious Greening Schools Initiative in Kwali to Drive Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action

In a landmark move aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and responsible citizenship among young learners, the Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board (FCT UBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has officially flagged off the Greening Schools and Tree Planting Campaign at Junior Secondary School, Bako, in Kwali Area Council.  The historic event brought together education stakeholders, traditional rulers, community leaders, teachers, learners, and government officials in a collective commitment to creating greener, healthier, and more sustainable learning environments across the Federal Capital Territory.

Leading the ceremony, the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT UBEB, Lady Florence Dawon Wenegieme, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of education, environmental protection, and national development. She emphasized that the campaign aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goals relating to quality education and environmental sustainability.  Lady Wenegieme expressed profound appreciation to the traditional institution, stakeholders, and community members for their support and participation, noting that the Board remains committed to not only providing quality education but also nurturing environmentally responsible citizens.

According to her, schools must serve as centres for academic excellence as well as platforms for instilling values, attitudes, and behaviours that contribute positively to national development.

“The greening of our schools is a priority for the Board. Beyond academic instruction, we are committed to teaching our children how to care for and sustain their environment. A safe and healthy environment is essential for effective learning and overall well-being,” she stated.

She highlighted the numerous benefits of tree planting, including improved air quality, erosion control, flood mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and the reduction of the impact of windstorms. She further noted that the campaign represents a deliberate effort to create conducive learning environments while preparing future generations to tackle environmental challenges.

Addressing the growing threat of climate change, Lady Wenegieme stressed that environmental stewardship is no longer optional but a necessity.

“Climate change is a global reality. Trees are vital to our survival and environmental sustainability. When we plant trees, we invest in cleaner air, healthier communities, and a safer future. Every individual should cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees within their homes and communities,” she said.

The Acting Executive Chairman further encouraged schools and communities to plant economic, medicinal, and timber trees that can provide long-term economic benefits. She advocated sustainable afforestation practices, urging citizens to replace every tree felled with new ones to ensure environmental balance.

Lady Wenegieme also commended the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Aisha Garba, for her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of basic education in Nigeria. She equally appreciated the support of the FCT Minister, the Minister of State for FCT, the Mandate Secretary for Education, the Permanent Secretary of the Education Secretariat, and the management of FCT UBEB for their dedication to educational transformation.

Linking the initiative to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship, she expressed optimism that tree planting could eventually create economic opportunities for learners and their families through future agricultural and environmental ventures.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Kwali Area Council Traditional Council and Etsu of Kwali, His Royal Highness Luka Ayedoo Nizassan III, lauded the initiative and described tree planting as a legacy project whose benefits extend across generations.

Recalling his personal experience as a pupil, the royal father disclosed that he had participated in a similar tree-planting exercise during his primary school days and was delighted to see the tree still standing years later.

“The importance of tree planting cannot be overemphasized. Trees provide shade, food, and environmental protection. They help reduce rising temperatures and serve as a lasting legacy for future generations. Learners should embrace this culture and take responsibility for nurturing every tree they plant,” he advised.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Director of Junior Secondary Schools (DJSS), FCT UBEB, described the event as a significant milestone in the Board's efforts to integrate environmental responsibility into the education system.

He explained that the Greening Schools and Tree Planting Campaign seeks to transform schools into centres of environmental learning where students acquire practical knowledge and skills necessary for addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

According to him, the initiative will not only beautify school environments but also improve air quality, provide natural shade, support biodiversity, reduce environmental degradation, and contribute significantly to climate change mitigation.

He commended the Executive Secretary of UBEC for her steadfast commitment to educational innovation and sustainability, while also praising the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT UBEB for her visionary leadership, strategic foresight, and unwavering support for programmes that promote quality education and holistic learner development.

Importantly, he announced that the campaign would be extended to schools across all six Area Councils of the FCT, ensuring broad participation and impact throughout the territory.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of Primary School Services, Malam Jubril Mohammed, reminded learners of the indispensable role trees play in sustaining life.

He explained the natural exchange between humans and plants, noting that while humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, plants utilize carbon dioxide for growth and, in turn, release oxygen necessary for human survival.

He warned against the dangers of desertification and environmental degradation, stressing that life becomes increasingly difficult in the absence of adequate tree cover.

In his vote of thanks, the Board's Agricultural Desk Officer, Dr. Wilfred Inchitiwa, expressed appreciation to the Acting Executive Chairman for her guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support, which ensured the successful implementation of the programme. He also thanked all stakeholders, traditional leaders, community members, teachers, and learners for their participation and commitment to the success of the initiative.

The flag-off ceremony culminated in the symbolic planting of trees by the Etsu of Kwali and Acting Executive Chairman of the Board signifying a collective pledge to protect the environment and promote sustainable development.
